5.0 out of 5 stars Natural and Immersive Sounding Headphones, February 23, 2010

I've owned these headphones for about a month and feel I'm ready to review them.

If I could pick two words to describe these headphones, the words would be Natural & Immersive.

I own a couple other Sennheiser products: the EH350 and the HD560. Comparing the three, the HD438 is my favorite. They're easier to drive than the HD560 and they sound better & are more comfortable than the EH350.

Sound Quality:
Detail is very important to me, and the HD438 does disappoint. I hear all the little nuances in music that other lesser headphones (like the EH350) tend to smooth over. The HD438 has a pretty wide soundstage for a sealed headphone as well. Instruments are well separated as well. They have good bass, better than both the EH350 and HD560. I'd say the bass is... 4.0 out of 5 stars HD438's - the best value for comfort, May 10, 2010

Just received these, so these are my first impressions. More to come later - long term observations, measurements and photos.

1) Very light, all plastic construction. The only metal I can see are the screws holding the vertical hinge above the ear cup for slight swivel action

2) The pressure on the ears is just about right to give a good seal to the head, but not to make them uncomfortable over extended periods. The velour pad material though is warm to the feel. Perhaps good in the cool, but in this warm spring it's very noticeable (I believe leather effect replacements are available from Sennheiser). The ear cups fit perfectly around my ears, but with no spare room. It may be that being 'over the ear', not 'on the ear' 'phones, the encapsulation of the ears retains heat (Later, I shall try my Bose QCII headphones with their pad material and compare the feeling)

3) Don't like the "wheel trim" chrome design. Black and plain would be more... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars All-around amazing, especially for rock, April 21, 2010

I first learned of Sennheiser's new 4x8 line of closed headphones when I saw someone around my campus wearing an unfamiliar pair of Sennheisers. Devoted Sennheiser fan that I am, I looked into it and learned they were HD-448s. Eventually I decided to check out their little brothers, the HD-438s, and I am very happy I did. These are possibly the all-around best headphones for under $100 I've had opportunity to try.

I'll start with the sound quality. In short, these are far and away the best closed headphones I've ever heard; they compete ably with my similarly-priced open headphones in clarity. (They don't have super-pumped bass like the box seems to indicate) My Sennheiser HD-555s cost about the same and sound a bit better, but only barely. The 438s are a bit low on the mids compared to the 555s, which also have slightly more defined bass. But these differences are barely noticeable and the 438s have only had about ten hours of burn-in so far, so they'll likely improve... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Best NC headphones on the market, April 6, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Sennheiser PXC 450 NoiseGard Active Noise-Canceling Headphones (Electronics)
I compared these headphones side-by-side with five other noise cancelling headphones: Bose QC2 & 3, JVC NC250, Audio Technica ANC7, and Sennheiser PXC-250. I was in the market for a noise cancelling headphone because I travel a lot and I wanted to be able to watch movies or listen to music in relative isolation. With the ipod earbuds, you have to blast your ears in order to compete with the airplane's engines and I want to preserve my hearing. My main criteria were sound qualifty, noise cancelling, and comfort. All three were very important and I didn't really want to compromise on any of those categories. The only headphone that excelled at all three was the PXC-450. I disqualified all but the PXC-450 on the basis of out of the box testing.

The JVC was disqualified right away on the basis of its cheap build quality. It does not fit snugly on your head, it is very loose. The slightest movement of my head and the earphones would slide around on my ears. Because... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Side by Side Comparison with Bose QC15's, November 12, 2009
By

This review is from: Sennheiser PXC 450 NoiseGard Active Noise-Canceling Headphones (Electronics)
I bought both the Bose QC-15's QuietComfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling headphones and Sennheiser PXC-450's Sennheiser PXC 450 NoiseGard Active Noise-Canceling Headphones to compare them side by side before plunking down ~$300 for headsets.

The Sennheiser PXC-450 headset is built much better than the QC15's for durability AND comfort. The quality difference can be seen in the wire gauage, battery compartment hardware, adaptor finish quality, and ear cup cushion. Sound quality was also richer and seemed more encompassing/fuller. I'm no audiophile by any means, but that is my best subjective judgement.

The QC15's however had far superior noise cancellation. This my main... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Bose QC15 vs. Sennheiser PXC 450 vs. Audio-Technica ATH-ANC7b, December 11, 2009
This review is from: Sennheiser PXC 450 NoiseGard Active Noise-Canceling Headphones (Electronics)
Disclosure: I have tried all these on an airplane. I am not an audiophile. Noise Cancelation is the most important attribute to me.

The Carrying Case: All three are quite durable and stiff.
1.) Bose- the smallest, a low profile, room for an Ipod, accessories too.
2.) Sennheiser- Square shape, low profile, however not a lot of room for anything else in case.
3.) Audio Technica- Nice big case if you want to carry extra stuff (Nintendo DS, ipod, etc).

Build Quality:
1.) Sennheiser- you can tell this is built VERY well. Strong plastics, good components, thick cord. Top notch. You feel like you are getting something really high quality.
2.) Audio Technica- Nice solid construction, appears durable.
3.) Bose- If this had a Sanyo logo on the side, I would not have flinched. How can something $300 be so incredibly cheaply made.

Size:
1.) Bose- as far as over the ears go, these are pretty small... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but what did you expect?, July 22, 2004

So headphone.com calls them "simply the world's best headphone." I can't speak for the Grado or AKG contenders. I can say that they're better than my Sennheiser 590's, and that is shocking.

Which leads me to my first (and probably most important) point about this headphone. They cost a lot. A whole lot. Sennheiser has many units, including the 580, 590, 595, 600, and 650 (among many others), which could be construed as 'reference' quality. You'll spend about half as much on one of the 5xx models as you will on the 650. So if you were to ask me whether the 650 is *twice as good* (that is to say, it costs more in proportion to its increased capability), I'll tell you no, probably not. I might just not buy them, given the decision again. Perhaps if the price came down a bit.

At any rate, they are really a superb headphone. The sound is really incredible. You never really realize what you're missing in a recording until you've heard it through a set like... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite an experience - but you need some patience at first, September 24, 2005

This review is from: Sennheiser HD 650 Headphones (Electronics)
As a lover of classical music I am a confirmed headphone listener. No set of speakers will offer the same amount of detail, most living rooms will add acoustic distortions, and many of us are not lucky enough to be able to play Mahler or Shostakovich at full power on a daily basis without getting into trouble with the neighbours.

For years I have been very happy with the Sony CD1700, an excellent headphone which is my point of reference for evaluating the HD650. The rest of my hifi set-up consists of a Marantz cd7300 CD player, PM7200 amplifier, and Musical Fidelity X-Can v3 headphone amplifier (a mandatory commodity if you intend to spend serious money on a headphone like this one). Also, I invested in the Cardas replacement cable for the HD650.

It is often said phones like this one need a 'break in' period. I used to regard this merely as snobbish audiophile technobabble - but found it to be actually true. Initially, I was less than pleased with the sound... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars NOT THE BEST CHOICE FOR CLASSICAL, May 10, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Sennheiser HD 650 Headphones (Electronics)
COMFORT: (Grade, B). The earcups are relatively deep, but not deep enough for ultimate comfort. Even after years of use, they don't let me forget that I have headphones on. On the other hand, the 650 feels much better than headphones with shallow cups that squash your ears (and make them sweat). The velour earpads can be replaced, which is good because they do wear down and attract dust. The ultra-soft, velvetlike velour is much better than pleather.

BUILD QUALITY: (Grade A-). The interior of the padded bridge is made of a hard, flexible metal that won't be cracking or breaking any time soon. The plastic bridge will break if you stretch it too much, so if you want to make the 650 less tight adjust the flexible metal NOT the plastic. The phones are sturdy without being heavy. After dropping them hard three or four times, they finally did require repairing, though. (One of the drivers got dislodged.) Still, these are very sturdy phones and don't feel cheap... Read more
