Headphone selection can be complicated as some are more suited for recording or live band use, some mixing and many just enjoying music a most subjective aspect. So there are many models maybe way too many making it difficult, sort of picking shoes on the Internet - may or may not be the best fit or feeling. Bass heads that want a music "blast" might find other models more to that design "taste". I have recently tested many models and have just a few top pics at under the $300 price level and the HD518's are my best pic for all around listening. Low distortion with wide response using E.A.R. After giving both units about 2 days of playing pink noise through a spare PC, I settled into my chair and began listening to some tracks I was very familiar with. Some of the treble seemed a bit bright and the mids seemed muddled and somewhat vague. The bass was spectacular for an open can and far surpassed the Bose Tri-Ports they replaced. I tweaked the settings on my PC and played with the volume on the amp and found some settings more to my tastes. I still wasn't satisfied with the overall sound though. Finally, I hooked them up to my Yamaha home receiver and played the same tracks I auditioned earlier on CD. Finally the clarity and detail I was looking for. After taking some notes on certain songs I returned to my computer and plugged the phones right into my sound card. I fired up WinAmp and played the... I like the fact this came with the standard 1/4th inch plug adapter that my laptop uses and the 6.3mm main plug that i can use on my audio mixer and other stuff.
